Location of De Waal in the municipality of Texel |
With 225 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), De Waal is the smallest village on the West Frisian island of Texel and is located north of the largest village, Den Burg . De Waal was founded in the 12th century and was right on the sea until 1613.
Camping tourism is an important source of income. Since 2006 there has been a cultural and historical museum in the village with exhibitions on village life, cattle breeding and handicrafts, which emerged from a wagon museum founded in 1963. The legend tells of trolls ( Sommeltjes ) who inhabit a burial mound near De Waal.
