Location of Den Burg in the municipality of Texel |
Den Burg is the capital and administrative center of the island of Texel in the Netherlands and the seat of the Texel City Council. In 2017, almost half of the island's population, around 6,400 residents, lived here. Due to its function as a tourist center, many shops and institutions are located in Den Burg. There is a library, a swimming pool, a secondary school, a tourist office, branches of various banks and a variety of shops in the village.
Archaeological excavations show that the place has been inhabited for a long time. A Frisian castle was found here, which was probably destroyed by the Franks around the 7th century . In 1345/1346 the village was fortified again by Count Jan van Beaumont. He made the monastery courtyard in the village the administrative center of the island. The streets leading around the center still bear witness to the castle character of the place; In 1356 the settlement began to be surrounded by a castle wall and a castle canal.
During the Second World War, the place suffered badly during the Georgian uprising on Texel . Many buildings, including monuments, were badly damaged during the bombardments by artillery.
A weekly market takes place every Monday morning. In the past, farmers from all parts of the island came with carts to sell their lambs. Today the sales negotiations with the cattle dealers are conducted directly on the farms. Once a year, on "Sheep Breeding Day", the first Monday in September, the best Texel studbook sheep are put on display.
