Debian GNU / Hurd is a Debian project to create a GNU - the operating system that the microkernel GNU Hurd uses. It is the most advanced operating system based on the Hurd.

history

Debian GNU / Hurd has been in development since 1998 and was officially released for the first time in May 2013. However, Hurd itself is still in development and not yet suitable for productive use.

  • The Debian GNU / Hurd developers released GNU / Hurd 2013 based on Debian 7 (code name "Wheezy"), which was released in May 2013.
  • On April 25, 2015, Debian GNU / Hurd 2015 was released, which is based on Debian 8 (code name "Jessie"). Network drivers were migrated to user mode, the NetDDE framework was integrated and the code base from Linux-2.6.32 was used.
  • On June 18, 2017, Debian GNU / Hurd 2017 was released, which is based on Debian 9 (code name "Stretch"). It has been updated to GNU Hurd 0.9 and GNU Mach 1.8, stability has been increased, the fakeroot tool has been improved, and the ability to run subhurds as an unprivileged user has been added to facilitate virtualization . In addition, the main memory supported has been increased to over 3  GiB .
  • On July 7, 2019, an ACPI translator was made available that is currently only used to shut down the system. The LwIP TCP / IP stack is now available as an option. A PCI arbiter has been introduced which will be useful to manage PCI access as well as to improve the provision of hardware access. Support for LLVM has been introduced. New optimizations include better memory page management, message dispatch and Gsync synchronization.

Hurd is not part of the official releases, but is one of the unofficial ports of Debian. Nevertheless, it is actively maintained and continuously improved.

distribution

Debian GNU / Hurd is distributed as an installer CD (with the official Debian installer ) or as a Live CD or Live USB . Debian GNU / Hurd currently only supports the x86 instruction set.
