Dedë Gjon Luli Dedvukaj (* 1840 in Traboin (today's Podgorica , Montenegro ), † September 24, 1915 in Orosh ( Albania )), known as Dedë Gjo 'Luli , was one of the leading commanders of the Albanian uprising against the Ottomans of 1911.

Life

Origin and previous years

Dedë Gjon Luli was born in Traboin, in the Albanian part (Malësia) of the Principality of Montenegro . He belonged to the Hoti tribe and was a Roman Catholic .

He participated in the League of Prizren . When the Berlin Congress in August 1878 ordered a border resolution between the Ottoman and the Montenegrin Empire, the Albanians successfully defended their areas around Plavë - Guci , while other areas, such as B. Ulqin , went to Montenegro. Dedë Gjon Luli participated in the Plavë - Guci resistance from 1879 to 1880.

Dedë Gjon Luli took part in the 1911 Malësor uprising against the Ottomans. There he became commander in chief of the Albanian armed forces. The Albanians were supported by King Nikola of Montenegro . The headquarters of the rebels was Podgorica , where King Nikola offered them refuge and eventually gave them weapons.

The Malësors were able to muster 8,000 men against the Ottomans, which King Nikola distributed all over the borders to attack Ottoman divisions. On April 6, 1911 there was a battle not far from the city of Tuzi in a place called Deçiq. There the Albanian rebels defeated the approximately 30,000 strong Ottoman division led by Shefqet Turgut Pasha with around 3,000 men. As a result, the Albanian flag was hoisted again for the first time after 442 years of Ottoman rule (since the fall of Shkoder in 1479).

On September 24, 1915 Dedë Gjon Luli died in Orosh in the Mirdita during a fight against an Ottoman contingent.
