Pierre-Paul Dehérain (born April 19, 1830 in Paris ; † December 7, 1902 there ) was a French chemist, plant physiologist and agronomist.

Live and act

Pierre-Paul Dehérain worked from 1854 to 1864 as a "preparator" at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers . In 1859 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the use of phosphates in agriculture. He then became professor of chemistry at the École Centrale d'Architecture . From 1865 he worked at the Ecole d'Agriculture de Grignon , where he founded an Argar station in 1875. From 1861 to 1870 Dehérain published the journal Annuaire scientifique . From 1872 he was a scientific advisor at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle and head of the newly established laboratory at the museum. On January 10, 1880, he was appointed professor of plant physiology .

In 1875 he was accepted into the Legion of Honor and appointed to one of its officers on October 29, 1889. On December 12, 1887, the Académie des Sciences elected him to its member.

Pierre-Paul Dehérain is known for his plant physiological studies. For example, he discovered the breathing of plant roots .

Honor taxon

Joseph Decaisne named the genus Deherainia of the plant family Theophrastaceae in his honor .
