Deighton Lisle Ward
Sir Deighton Harcourt Lisle Ward , GCMG , GCVO (* 16th May 1909 ; † 9. January 1984 ) was a politician of the Barbados Labor Party (BLP) from Barbados , who until his death in 1984 from 1976 Governor General of Barbados was.
Life
Ward completed his education at Harrison College, founded in Bridgetown in 1733, and then studied law , whereupon he took up a position as a lawyer in 1934 . He was initially a member of the Legislative Council between 1955 and 1958 and was elected a member of the House of Assembly for the first time in 1958 as a candidate of the Barbados Labor Party , in which the BLP received four of the then five seats. He was also a freemason and president of the Barbados Football Association (BFA).
On November 17, 1976 Ward succeeded William Douglas as Governor General of Barbados and held this office until his death on January 9, 1984, whereupon William Douglas was again acting governor. In 1976 he was beaten to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG) and from then on carried the suffix "Sir". In 1977 he was also Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO).
Ward was married to Lady Mary Doreen Ward and was buried after his death in the Cathedral Church of St Michael & All Angels in Bridgetown.
