Nita Barrow
Dame Ruth Nita Barrow (born November 15, 1916 in Saint Lucy (Barbados) , † December 19, 1995 in Barbados ) was a Barbadian health and human rights activist and politician and the first and so far only female Governor General of Barbados .
Live and act
The daughter of an Anglican priest and sister of the Barbadian Prime Minister Errol Barrow trained as a nurse and midwife as well as in care administration. She then went on to study to become a qualified health worker at the Universities of Toronto and Edinburgh and at Columbia University in New York City.
Nita Barrow began her career as a senior nurse and health advisor in Barbados and Jamaica in the 1940s . They quickly became aware of her and in 1964 she got a job as a health advisor at the World Health Organization and later also at the Organización Panamericana de la Salud . From 1975 to 1983 she headed the Young Women's Christian Association as president , from 1982 to 1990 the International Council for Adult Education and, in the meantime, in 1983 the general assembly of the Ecumenical Council of Churches in Vancouver .
Dame Barrow was accepted as a member of the United Nations Forum for the "Decade of Women" in 1983 and in 1985 she chaired the international women’s conference in Nairobi . In 1986 she was the only woman to belong to an international Commonwealth delegation that campaigned for the release of Nelson Mandela and examined the consequences of apartheid in South Africa. In the same year she received accreditation as Barbados Ambassador to the United Nations. Finally, Dame Nita Barrow was appointed Governor-General of Barbados on June 6, 1990, an office she held until her death from a stroke on December 19, 1995.
