Del Meriwether

Del Meriwether (actually Wilhelm Delano Meriwether; born April 23, 1943 ) is a former American sprinter .

At the Pan American Games in Cali in 1971 , he won bronze over 100 m .

In 1971 he was US champion over 100 yards and in 1972 US indoor champion over 60 yards.

He was the first African American who at the School of Medicine of Duke University was accepted. After completing his Masters at Johns Hopkins University , he was a White House Fellow in 1973/74 . In 1976 he directed the national flu vaccination program.

From 1983 he worked with his wife Nomvimbi for eight years as a doctor in their native South Africa . Her daughter Nana Meriwether became Miss USA in 2012 .
