Matthieu Delpierre (born April 26, 1981 in Nancy ) is a former French football player . He was most recently under contract with Melbourne Victory in the Australian A-League . Before that he was active in France, Germany and the Netherlands.
Career
Childhood, Youth and Beginnings
Matthieu Delpierre was born in Nancy and grew up in Nantes . He played for Lille OSC since the age of 14 and was eliminated with the club in the UI Cup against VfB Stuttgart in the summer of 2002 . Because of his achievements, the scouts Herbert Briem and Erwin Hadewicz noticed him. After he had rejected a contract extension in Lille during the winter break of the 2003/04 season, he was relegated to the reserve team by coach Claude Puel . In the following period he received an inquiry from RC Lens from France , but favored a move abroad. In addition to VfB Stuttgart, 1. FC Cologne was also interested in him.
VfB Stuttgart
In the end, VfB Stuttgart made the race for Delpierre. In his first season at VfB Stuttgart, he was not used regularly. It was only when coach Giovanni Trapattoni was signed for the 2005/06 season that the young defender became a fixture in the VfB defense. Despite a ligament tear at the start of the season, Delpierre played 29 Bundesliga games, eight UEFA Cup games and two league cup appearances . In the 2006/07 season he became a regular player and was German champion with VfB . It was the first title win in Delpierre's career. He was also in the final of the DFB Cup with VfB .
On December 1, 2009 Delpierre became team captain of VfB Stuttgart. Head coach Bruno Labbadia appointed Serdar Tasci as the new team captain on January 12, 2012 , fulfilling Delpierre's request to replace him.
After his contract with Stuttgart expired, Delpierre moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for the 2012/13 season and signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2014. There he was sorted out by Markus Gisdol and had to train in TSG's controversial "training group 2".
Netherlands and Australia
On January 31, 2014 Delpierre moved to FC Utrecht . In July 2014, the Australian club Melbourne Victory signed him . There he ended his career as a professional football player in April 2016.
National team
Delpierre went through the French national youth teams up to the U-21 . After he was called up by the French national coach Raymond Domenech in the squad of the senior team for the games against Mali and England , he put Delpierre on March 25, 2008 in the game against the senior team of Mali from the beginning. However, this game is only rated as an A 'international match by the French association , which corresponds to a B international match in German.
