Demigod (English for demigod ) is a computer game by Gas Powered Games for Windows. It is one of the so-called multiplayer online battle arenas , a mixture of role and real-time strategy game . The game title refers to the powerful player characters who fight for supremacy over the various zones. The game is multiplayer and competitive.

Game mechanics

The origin of Demigod is the Warcraft III modification Defense of the Ancients , which strongly influenced the game mechanics. There are two different types of demigods, assassins and generals . Assassins rely on their various combat skills in direct combat to kill another Demigod. Generals create their own servants and support these and other demigods.

The player receives gold and experience points for defeating the enemy and capturing flags. As the demigod of the player increases in level, he also receives new skills from the respective skill tree. Each Demigod has its own talent tree with a mix of offensive, defensive and team skills. Demigods can also buy items to improve their skills.

Development history

GameStop had already released Demigod on April 9, 2009, 5 days before the original date (April 14, 2009) . In response to this, Stardock activated all pre-ordered games one day earlier on Monday, April 13, 2009. Demigod originally appeared with 8 demigods and was expanded to include 2 demigods a few months after the release.

Connection problems

On April 15, 2009, Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock, filed a status report to clarify the connectivity issues with the multiplayer component of the game. In the report, he explains that only about 18,000 of the 120,000 connections are from legitimate users, and that the overwhelming number of illegitimate users are overloading their systems. Since then, Stardock has taken steps to stabilize their online multiplayer system.

Patch 1.01 did not bring any improvement for players from Europe, Australia and Asia, as the proxy servers for these regions have not yet been completed.

Stardock reimbursed full price to players who played only a few hours and 75% of the price to players who played more than a few hours.

On June 3rd, Brad "Frogboy" Wardell, CEO of Stardock, made the following statement on an Internet forum:

“In my opinion, the game deserves a bad rap. My disappointment with some of the things I have seen is too great to express in words. This is one of the reasons I pulled people from the Elemental Project to Demigod to address and correct issues. In my opinion, too many "things" have been licensed and not audited. If the Stardock / GPG team can't sort these things out quickly, the game deserves to go under. "

In the meantime (as of June 2011) more patches are available and the game is much more stable.

reception

The ratings for Demigod vary greatly. Metacritic currently reports a total of 77 points, the results of individual websites range from 50 points to 92 points. The gaming site 1UP.com sums up the majority of the negative and angry reviews the game has received with the following quote: “If you're interested in throwing your money away on a beta, and maybe get some practice with it before anything runs smoothly, then do it and increase the points a little. Everyone else should look for something else by then, "with Lydia Sung from Neoseeker giving the game a perfect 10, especially referring to the game's breathtaking graphics and sounds with the words:" Most games worth testing , look good and may have an adequate soundtrack, but Demigod is absolutely stunning to the eyes and ears. Words cannot describe how beautiful this game is and my screenshots cannot do it justice. ” Cheat Code Central gave the game a" Very Good "rating (4.3 / 5)

GameSpot gave the game 6.5 out of 10, citing major online connectivity issues and the lack of tutorials or a campaign with a story. Stardock pointed out that they are currently working on all multiplayer issues. PC Gamer's Graham Smith gave the game an 8.1 / 10 rating. IGN's Jason Ocampo gave the game a 7.5 / 10 due to the poor network code and said, "You'd better wait while the developers get everything up and running before you dive into Demigod." Gameinformer magazine gave the game an 8 out of 10, where they praised the fun of the DotA fights as well as the structure and balanced characters. The AI was criticized and that the game is only interesting for players who are interested in the multiplayer aspect, as the single player does not do justice to the rest of the game.
