Dengelgeist

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dengelgeist is an Alemannic legendary figure and is represented as a grim reaper and a bearded old man .

The dengelgeist sits in the cemetery and sharpens ( dengles ) his scythe in order to mow down those destined to die. He thus personifies death. In the representation of the Middle Ages it appears even more as a skeleton . Johann Peter Hebel designed him as an angel with golden wings, in a white robe with a pink belt. Upon request, the gel Spirit gives replied that he mow only fodder for the asses of the Christ child and the cows of the holy Fridolin .

In Tyrol, Dengelgeist (or Dengelmandl ) describes the spirit of a man who cannot (i.e. never ) stop pounding because he disturbed the Sunday rest by sharpening the scythe during his lifetime .
