Denise Coates

Denise Coates CBE (born September 26, 1967 in Stoke-on-Trent ) is a British entrepreneur. She is the founder and CEO of the online betting company Bet365 . The magazine Forbes estimated her fortune in 2018 to 4.6 billion dollars.

Life

Denise Coates is the oldest daughter of the entrepreneur Peter Coates, who mainly runs a catering company for football stadiums and secondarily betting shops . She is married to Richard Smith, who is employed as a director at Stoke City FC , and they have five children. She studied econometrics at the University of Sheffield and then worked in the family's betting shops and in the family's bookkeeping. With a bank loan from Barclays , she bought more betting shops and bookmaker businesses and in 1995 became a director of the Provincial Racing chain .

In January 2000, Coates acquired the Internet domain Bet365.com . Within a year she developed the Bet365 platform for online betting and gambling. As start-up capital, she received a £ 15 million loan from the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) with the security of the family business. In 2005 the betting offices were sold to the Gala Coral Group and the proceeds from the bank loan were used to repay them. Coates is the majority shareholder in Bet365 with 50 percent and one share, family members own a further 43 percent. She runs the company together with her brother John Coates.

Coates developed Bet365 into the world's largest provider of online betting. Bet365 is the largest private employer in Stoke-on-Trent with 1900 employees (as of 2010) . The company also owns the majority of the shares in the Premier League football club Stoke City Football Club . In 2015 the company headquarters was relocated to Gibraltar for tax reasons .

Coates was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2012 for her services as an entrepreneur .
