Monument to Friedrich II in the Volkspark Friedrichshain

Friedrich II of Prussia is a memorial in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district in the Volkspark Friedrichshain not far from the small pond near Friedenstraße .

The erection of a memorial for Frederick the Great was initiated by citizens of Berlin. Fundraising began for the memorial in March 1848. One of the founders was the former court tailor JS Freytag. A substantial monetary donation followed from the Hohenzollerns . Mayor Franz Christian Naunyn inaugurated the monument on August 17, 1848 .

description

A marble column with a colossal bust of Frederick rises on a five-step circular staircase on a square substructure . The column is 4.50 meters high, 80 centimeters in diameter at the top and 1.30 centimeters at the bottom. The bronze bust created by Andreas Artur Hoferick after Christian Daniel Rauch is 1.40 meters high and 1.10 meters wide. Above the steps there is the inscription on the front and back : FRIEDRICH THE GREAT HIS FELLOWSHIP WHO WANTED TO KEEP THE MEMORY OF THE GREAT KING OUR DESCENDERS BY ESTABLISHING THIS GROVE, ESTABLISHED THIS MONUMENT AS A TOKEN OF THANKS TO THE BUERGIII.

reconstruction

Around 1949/50 the East Berlin magistrate removed the monument as part of the “further development” of the park into a “ cultural park ” based on the Soviet model. After the reunification of Berlin, the remains of the column were rediscovered under rubble during leveling work near the old location. The column was restored between 1998 and 2000 on behalf of the Berlin-Friedrichshain district office. The restored monument with the newly created bust of Friedrich by Andreas Artur Hoferick based on Rauch's original was erected on April 13, 2000 at the old square.
