The Synagogue Square Tübingen memorial is intended to commemorate the synagogue of the city of Tübingen that was destroyed during the Reichspogromnacht in 1938 and, in particular, the expelled and murdered Tübingen Jews.

History and description

The memorial was created as part of the initiative of a project group from the Tübingen history workshop , which resulted in an artistic competition in 1998 , which the sculptor Gert Riel won with his design.

As a result, the monument, which was inaugurated in November 2000, was created together with the Nürtingen Architects' Association and, among other things, with the support of the city of Tübingen. It consists of a fountain with a steel cube, which symbolizes the destroyed synagogue. 101 square openings in the steel walls are reminiscent of the same number of personalities from Tübingen named on plaques by the gully who were expelled or even murdered in the Holocaust .

The inside of a tall steel stele contains texts on the history of the Tübingen- Reutlingen Jewish community up to the destruction . The difficult handling of the site of the destroyed synagogue was documented on another plaque installed on the memorial.
