The monument to Charles Mathieu stands in front of the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church in Lourches , a French commune in the Nord department in the Hauts-de-France region . The monument at Square du 8-May-1945 was added to the list of listed buildings ( Base Mérimée ) in France in 2009 as Monument historique .

Charles Mathieu (* 1798 in Anzin ) was an engineer, director of the Compagnie des mines de Douchy and mayor of Lourches. The company owned extensive facilities and tens of thousands of employees in the northern French coal region (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012 ).

The monument was commissioned by the Compagnie des mines de Douchy and designed by the architect Constant Moyaux by the sculptor Corneille-Henri Theunissen and donated to the community in 1901.

The life-size bronze figure of Charles Mathieu, who is holding plans in his left hand, stands on a high stone plinth . The walls of the base, which are made in the form of a tunnel, show the tools of the miners. In front of it are the figures of two young miners, a man with a miner's lamp and a kneeling woman with tools in her hands.

The inscription reads:
