history

In 1846, the pedagogue and dialect singer and poet of the Ore Mountains Christian Friedrich Röder (born April 7, 1827 in Schneeberg; † November 28, 1900 in Johanngeorgenstadt) took on an assistant teaching position in the mountain town of Johanngeorgenstadt. In 1849 he became a cantor and from 1880 to 1887 he worked as a school director at the community school in Johanngeorgenstadt. He was a co-founder of the Erzgebirge branch association and became known in the Erzgebirge through numerous dialect poems, some of which were also set to music and performed musically by him.

In 1901 a memorial was erected for him on the open space opposite his house and was ceremoniously unveiled on September 8, and the complex was henceforth named Röderplatz.

In 1943 Röder's bronze bust was removed from the granite base and had to be melted down for war purposes after a plaster cast had been made of it. After this impression a new bust was made, which was ceremoniously unveiled on June 14, 1970 on the old square in the meanwhile largely demolished old town of Johanngeorgenstadt.

The maintenance of the outdoor area of the monument to Christian Friedrich Röder was done by school classes from the Pestalozzi School (Polytechnic High School) in their free time.

On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the Röder monument, a special exhibition on Röder was shown in the Pestalozzi School.
