Christian Friedrich Röder was the son of a master wood turner working in Schneeberg. He attended the Lyceum in his hometown and then the teachers' college in Dresden-Friedrichstadt . In 1844 he got a job as an assistant teacher at the Schindler blue paint factory near Bockau and in 1846 went to Johanngeorgenstadt as an assistant teacher. In 1849 he became cantor there and worked from 1880 to 1887 as the school director at the community school in this mountain town. Here he founded the Erzgebirgszweigverein . Röder married Caroline Troll (1828–1899). His tomb is still in the Johanngeorgenstadt cemetery today.

In 1901 a memorial was erected for him on the open space opposite the house where he was born and unveiled on September 8, and the Röderplatz complex named.

The bust was removed from the granite base in 1943 and melted down as a metal donation after a plaster cast had been made of it. After this impression a new bust was made, which was ceremoniously unveiled on June 14, 1970 in the old square.

In the new town of Johanngeorgenstadt, a street was named after Röder.
