Dennis Walter Conner (born September 16, 1942 in San Diego , California ) is an American professional sailor . Because of his many successes in the America's Cup (AC), he is also called Mister America's Cup .

From 1974 to 2003 Dennis Conner competed in every AC as a skipper . From 1987 he started with his own boats under the name Stars & Stripes , after the American national flag Stars and Stripes . He is the only helmsman who lost the America's Cup (1983) and regained it (1987). Conner is also the only skipper to lose the cup twice (1983 and 1995). He won a total of 17 AC races and was four times the winner (1974, 1980, 1987, 1988).
