Dennis Franz Schlachta (born October 28, 1944 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actor in theater, film and television.

Life

The son of a German immigrant grew up in simple circumstances in a suburb of Chicago . His original career aspiration was a postman. In the 11th grade, Franz auditioned for the sake of his girlfriend for the main role in a school performance, which he got immediately. Because of this, he decided to become an actor.

After high school he studied from 1962 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and made a degree in theater. A short time later, Franz was drafted into the military and was stationed in Vietnam for eleven months as part of the 82nd Airborne Division . His experiences in the war cause him depression and nightmares to this day .

After returning to the United States , he joined the Organic Theater Company in 1972 . During an audition, he was discovered by Robert Altman , who persuaded him to move to Los Angeles .

Franz is often cast as a police officer. He played this role in Dressed to Kill , Chicago Story , Deadly Messages , The Package , Nasty Boys , Die Hard 2 and also in the two television series that made his breakthrough: Hill Street Police Station and New York Cops - NYPD Blue . For the latter, he has received several Emmy awards for best leading actor. He has also received other nominations and awards from the Golden Globe Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards .

In 1998 he earned a lot of critical acclaim for his portrayal of the angel Nathaniel Messinger in City of Angels .

Dennis Franz has been married to Joanie Zeck since 1995.
