Dennis Liwewe

Caron Dennis Liwewe (born January 10, 1936 in Makuzi , Nyassaland , † April 22, 2014 in Lusaka , Zambia ) was a Malawian-Zambian football player and an active sports journalist and football commentator until his death .

Life

Liwewe was born in 1936 on Lake Malawi in Makuzi in what was then Nyasaland (now Malawi ). In his youth, the family moved to Southern Rhodesia , now Zimbabwe , and Dennis attended Dadaya Secondary School. During this time he actively played soccer and, after graduating from secondary school, began teaching at Dadaya Teachers Training College. In 1961, after completing his degree, he moved to Chingola , Zambia. In Chingola, he started a career as a sports commentator with a focus on football and wrote several specialist books. Through his work he got the Zambian passport in 1971 and became chief reporter and deputy news editor of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines weekly newspaper Nchanga. Four years later, Liwewe took over as media and public relations manager for the weekly newspaper Nchanga. At the same time, he moderated the international matches of the Zambian national football team from the end of the 1970s . He was also the African sports correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) from 1976 to 2004 . During this time he was awarded the Order of Distinguished Service by President Kenneth Kaunda in 1977 . His biggest commentary experience was the 4-0 victory over Italy by Zambia in the soccer competition of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , South Korea .

At the beginning of April 2014 Liwewe came to Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital in Lusaka with liver problems , where he died on April 22, 2014 at the age of 78 as a result of liver failure .

Liwewe was married and had four children.
