Dennis Smith (born 1940 ) is an American author and former firefighter with the New York City Fire Department .
Life
Dennis Smith grew up as a descendant of Irish immigrants in the East Side of the New York borough of Manhattan . He dropped out of high school early and became a firefighter with the NYFD in 1963. In the following years he studied evening classes at New York University and received a Bachelor in English in 1970 followed by a Master in Communications in 1972. In 1973 he wrote his first book about his experiences during his service at Engine Company 82 " Report from Engine Co. 82 " .
Encouraged by his success, he founded Firehouse Magazine in 1976 , which is now one of the most widely read fire department magazines in the United States.
Although he had left the FDNY in 1981 after 16 years of service, he returned to the service after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and helped 50 days with the rescue work at Ground Zero . He processed this in his book "Report from Ground Zero" , which appeared in 2003.
