reception

In the Anime Encyclopedia , parallels are drawn between the concept of Ideon and the Gundam franchise, which was also invented by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise. Although Ideon relied more on extremely powerful and crazy weapons, Gundam was much more successful. The anime influenced the very successful series Neon Genesis Evangelion in the 1990s . Their character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto said there was a lot of talk in the concept phase about making a series like Ideon . The plot of Evangelion is constructed similarly and the organization NERV is inspired by the crew of the solo spaceship. Ideon also adopted the idea of robots that are controlled by children and sometimes get out of control .
