KK Dentsū ( Japanese 株式会社 電 通 , Kabushiki kaisha Dentsū ; English Dentsu, Inc. ) is a Japanese advertising agency , listed in the Nikkei 225 . Dentsū is the fifth largest advertising agency in the world by gross profit and the largest among non-consolidated advertising agencies.

The largest main competitors worldwide include Omnicom , WPP , IPG and Havas .

history

In 1901 Mitsunaga Hoshirō ( 光 永 星 郎 ) founded the company Nihon Kōkoku ( 日本 広 告 , dt. "Japan advertising") and the Dempō Tsūshinsha ( 電報 通信 社 , dt. "Telegram news agency"). The latter was reorganized in 1906 as the Nihon Dempō Tsūshinsha ( 日本 電報 通信 社 ) company. In 1907 the Nihon Kōkoku merged with the Nihon Dempō Tsūshinsha . In 1936 the company focused on its function as an advertising agency and spun off the news division as an independent news agency Dōmei Tsūshinsha ( 同盟 通信 社 ). In 1943 16 advertising agencies are taken over and locations are set up in Osaka , Nagoya and Kyūshū . In 1955 the company name is shortened to Dentsū . In 1981 JIMA Dentsu founded the Dentsu Young & Rubicam (DYR) joint venture with the American advertising agency Young & Rubicam . Since 2001, the company's shares have been publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Dentsū is still involved in the television station and Dentsū offshoot Tokyo Broadcasting System and in Television Nishi-Nippon . The Dentsū Group has over a dozen subsidiaries, including Dentsu PR .

International activities

With the Dentsu Network West, founded in October 2010, the company has bundled its growing activities outside of Japan - especially in America and Europe - under a new roof. These include Dentsu America, McGarryBowen, Firstborn, 360i, Attik and Steak. In Latin America the Dentsu Network West u. a. represented by Dentsu Argentina and Dentsu Brazil. In Europe these include Dentsu Düsseldorf, Dentsu London, Dentsu Brussels, Cayenne Italia and Dentsu Russia. Further locations of the global network can be found in India, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, the Middle East, North Africa, Russia, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Activities in Germany

In March 2011, cayenne advertising agency GmbH, founded in 1997, merged with the digital agency SocialThinkers and has been operating as Dentsu Düsseldorf ever since. Dentsu Düsseldorf is part of the Dentsu Network West, an agency group of 34 companies in America and Europe with its headquarters in New York. Dentsū also has influence in the German TV market, the company holds 37.5% shares in dctp , a German media company.
