Denver Pop Festival

The Denver Pop Festival took place at Mile High Stadium from June 27-29, 1969 , just under two months before the Woodstock Festival . Well-known rock stars like Frank Zappa , Johnny Winter and Jimi Hendrix performed . The organizer was Barry Fey. Admission was 6 $ per day, $ 15 for all three days. The audience is estimated at 50,000.

During the festival, there were riots in front of the stadium. Protesters demanded free entry and tried to break through the gates. The police used tear gas, which at times also caused unrest in the stadium.

Notes about the festival

The Jimi Hendrix Experience made their last joint appearance at the Denver Pop Festival.

Led Zeppelin were also booked but didn't show up because their flight to Denver couldn't go as planned due to bad weather.

Frank Zappa used the audience as a "musical instrument": he divided the audience into different sections, which he made different noises and gestures according to his specifications.

There was free entry on Sunday after all tickets were sold.
