The landfill gas block-type thermal power station (DBHKW) Kornharpen is a block- type thermal power station in Bochum- Kornharpen.
The power plant was opened in 1994 and doubled in output in 1997. The operators are Stadtwerke Bochum and USB Umweltservice Bochum GmbH , who invested a total of approx. 9 million euros in the system.
It is operated with landfill gas from the Kornharpen central landfill . The gas is collected with the help of around 30 gas wells and transported to the power plant via a pipe system. There it is recycled in two blocks with four gas engines each .
On average, the power plant generates around 21 gigawatt hours of electricity and around 31 gigawatt hours of district heating annually. It can thus supply around 9,700 households with electricity and 2,500 households with district heating. Since the gas yield of the landfill wells fluctuates, natural gas is also used for support.
The landfill gas consists of around 53% methane , which is a greenhouse gas . It is 23 times stronger than CO 2 . In March 2005, after around ten years of operation, 100 million cubic meters of landfill gas had already been used.
