action

In old France in royal times. The king is considered to be a man who doesn’t let women burn anything. Now he has his eye on Blanche, the pretty daughter of his court jester Rigoletto. Concerned about her innocence, Rigoletto then has his daughter guarded by an old woman around the clock. With the help of his courtiers, however, the monarch manages to use a trick to persuade Rigoletto himself to kidnap Blanche and have him brought to the royal court. The young woman is at first appalled by this brazen robbery of women, but over time flows more and more as she learns to appreciate the king's gallantry. Deeply angry about the alleged dishonor of his daughter, Rigoletto now swears revenge on the king. But Blanche assures her father that she has deep feelings for the man who stole her innocence and asks for mercy.

The court jester is horrified at how far Blanches' erotic blindness has evidently progressed and hires the fisherman Saltabadil to carry out his revenge on the king. If Saltabadil brought him the sacked corpse of the king to the Seine the following night, he would be rewarded with a lot of money. The greedy fisherman is ready to plot a murder, but Blanche has overheard the two men in their dark trade. She is ready to sacrifice herself for her love. Blanche goes to the fisherman's house dressed as a courtier. In the dark he thinks the girl is the king and stabs her. Then he puts the corpse in the sack and, as agreed, hands it to Rigoletto. Convinced that he has got the right one, the fool is about to sink the sack in the river when he hears the king's voice. Full of foreboding, Rigoletto opens the sack and recognizes the body of his beloved daughter in it. Tormented by unspeakable pain, he bends over the corpse and weeps for the dead.

Reviews

“This film drama has all the advantages of Hugo's art of design and was one of those pieces that gave the signal for the great romantic movement in France. We have before us a masterful cultural painting of the medieval French kingdom. The descriptions of the lightness and viciousness of the French court at that time are excellent. Each picture in itself is lifelike and vividly represented in the film, so that you never had to do without the spoken word. "

- Cinematographic review of October 27, 1917. p. 66

Paimann's film lists summed up: “Material and game excellent. Photos very good. Scenery, Kreuzenstein Castle and Vienna City Hall shots awarded "
