action
1st act
Lukáš's wife died recently, but he has another woman in mind. So he sends his brother-in-law Tomeš to Vendulka, with whom he was in love before his wedding. Although Vendulka's father doubts that the two thick-headed heads would harmonize as a couple, he does not stand in the way of the connection.
Out of respect for the deceased woman, whose child she would like to lovingly adopt, Vendulka does not want to kiss him, because this is only possible after their wedding. Lukáš shows no understanding for this and Vendulka refuses any concession. So the engagement fails and he furiously goes to the village pub. He comes back with some musicians and to annoy them he kisses another. To escape this shame, she follows Martinka's advice to join the smugglers.
2nd act
Lukáš does not give up and goes after her. Tomeš persuades him to forgive him. Vendulka lets himself be persuaded by Matouš, the smuggler boss, and Martinka. Now there is a big festival of reconciliation - Vendulka wants to kiss Lukáš, but now he is resisting. But he just wanted to show his courtesy and nothing stands in the way of an engagement kiss.
