The killer is always the gardener is a song by Reinhard Mey . It was released in 1971 on the album Ich bin aus That Holze .

“The killer is always the gardener” is a parody of popular stereotypes in crime novels and films, particularly the Edgar Wallace and Agatha Christie films that were popular in the 1960s .

The title can be found in the chorus of the song:

The killer was the gardener again,
and he's already planning the next coup.
The killer is always the gardener
and he strikes mercilessly!

After the song was released in 1971 on the studio album Ich bin aus den den Holze , it was released as a single in 1972. Mey later composed other stanzas and then varied the text for various appearances for current occasions. For example, in the live version on the album 8:00 pm from 1974, where he alludes to the 1973 oil crisis with the line "... gasoline is now becoming scarce in the underworld too" . In addition, with this version, as with the one on the 1995 live album Zwischen Zürich und zu Haus , the plumber is the culprit in the final punch and not the butler. This is a reference to Mey's song I'm a Plumber by Job from the 1974 album Like Years and Days .

Reinhard Mey also wrote a French version of the song under the title L'assassin est toujours le Jardinier . It appeared in 1972 on the album Edition Française Vol. 2 ; a live version can be found on the album Recital. Frédérik Mey à l'Olympia from 1976. Here, too, the title can be found in the chorus of the song:

L'assassin était le jardinier
Qui se réjouit d'un nouveau crime.
L'assassin est toujours le jardinier
Qui néglige lilas, bleuets et myosotis
Pour se trouver une victime.

Due to its popularity, the German title of the song went down as a winged word in the German language in the 1970s .

Individual evidence

  1. Mey ironically introduces the additional stanzas at 8:00 p.m. with the comment "... despite the most violent protests of the gardeners' guild ...".
