The Death of Empedocles (full title: The Death of Empedocles - or, if then the earth green shines anew yourselves ; French title:. La Mort d'Empedocle ) is a German-French film by Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub from 1986, based on the unfinished tragedy of the same name by Friedrich Hölderlin in the first two-act version. The film was shown at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1987 , among others . The two directors' preoccupation with Hölderlin's Empedocles fragments was continued in 1989 with the follow-up film Black Sin .
