The fantastic film is a feature film series that was broadcast by ZDF from 1970 .

The series was conceived by the ZDF editor and film journalist Jürgen Labenski . The series leader, a cartoon animation , was created by Heinz Edelmann .

The series was to open on November 28, 1969 with Roman Polański's Dance of the Vampires . Broadcasting rights for eleven other films have been secured, including the film adaptations The Island of Lost Souls (1933) and The Time Machine (1960) based on H. G. Wells , The Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) based on Jules Verne , the horror film Schloß des Schreckens (1961) who have favourited sci-fi films The Village of the Damned (1960) , They Came from Beyond Space (1967) and the Doctor Who film Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 AD (1966) and The Red Hostel (1951) and King Kong and the White Woman (1933). After the murder of Sharon Tate , Polanski's wife, Dance of the Vampires was shown again in the cinema and the ZDF was not given permission to broadcast this film. In addition, the ARD began on January 24, 1970 with the broadcast of Dracula (1931) a competing series of horror films, so that the start of the entire series was postponed.

The fantastic film began with the first German television broadcast of King Kong and the White Woman on November 13, 1970. Until November 1972, there was a monthly slot in the late-night program on Friday evening. After a break of several years, the series was resumed on May 5, 1976 with the production of Dracula (1958) . Several longer breaks and new seasons followed until 1992. The last contribution in the series is the film Horror Express (1971), which was broadcast on January 2, 1993. At the beginning, only German TV premieres were presented, later more repetitions were added.

The specialty channel ZDFkultur sent on May 8, 2011 to September 30, 2016, a series of opening credits, where the original opening credits running in the background, under the series title several films.
