Deraeocoris scutellaris is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae). The species isvery closely relatedto Deraeocoris morio . The latter is even considered a synonym by some authors.

features

The bugs are 5.4 to 6.7 millimeters long. They are completely black in color or just have a red scutellum . The nymphs are also black.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed in Europe from Scandinavia and the British Isles across Central and Eastern Europe, east to Siberia, Mongolia and China. In Germany there are only a few records of the very rare species from the north and east. It has not yet been proven in Austria.

In northern Germany, moors and damp to dry heaths are populated. In Great Britain they can be found in a number of different habitats, such as heaths, on calcareous soils or grasslands with abundant herbaceous vegetation.

Way of life

The bugs live on the ground under heather ( Calluna ) and heather ( Erica ). The adult bugs seldom climb onto the plants and are therefore rarely nested . There is also evidence of the species on narrow-leaved fireweed ( Epilobium angustifolium ). The overwintering takes place as an egg. The nymphs develop in spring, the adult bugs appear in June and July and after reproduction disappear no later than August.
