Derek Fowlds (born September 2, 1937 in London , † January 17, 2020 in Bath ) was a British actor .

Career

Derek Fowlds studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1958 to 1960 . During the 1958 summer vacation, he first appeared in a professional theater in Colwyn Bay . After graduating, he began acting at London's West End theater. He took on supporting roles in films such as Doktor in Noten with Dirk Bogarde , Hotel Paradiso with Alec Guinness and Gina Lollobrigida and the hammer horror flick Frankenstein created a woman with Peter Cushing . From the 1960s, Fowlds also played regularly in television series . From 1969 to 1973, Fowlds worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation as a showmaster for a children's program.

His best-known role was that of Secretary of State Bernard Woolley in the satirical television series Yes Minister and the sequel Yes Prime Minister . In the television series Heartbeat , he played the character of the police officer Oscar Blaketon (retired during the series) for 18 years .

Fowlds published his autobiography , A Part Worth Playing , in 2015 .

Private

Fowlds was married twice: from 1964 to 1973 to Wendy Tory and from 1974 to 1978 to the dancer and television presenter Lesley Judd. He had two sons from his first marriage. He died in January 2020 at the age of 82 of complications from pneumonia.
