Derrick Sydney Allen (born April 18, 1930 in Luton , † November 30, 1978 ibid) was an English football player .

Career

Allen played at the Limbury Boys Club in Luton as a youth before joining Alton Town on an amateur basis . In January 1952, he joined the professional club in his hometown - Luton Town - but continued to work as a truck driver. His only competitive game for the professional team from Luton had under his nickname "Sos" popular player in March 1955, when he was called up in a game of the Football League Second Division against Derby County (final score 0-0). In mid-1956 he left Luton Town and moved to local rivals Watford FC , rather unusual given the rivalry between the two clubs.

At Watford, Allen played ten games in a row from late October to early December 1956, mostly as a left winger, including six games in the Third Division South ; he scored his only goal in a 2-1 league win against Exeter City . In February 1957 he left Watford again and joined Folkestone Town with his teammate Bryan Atkinson in the Kent League . For the 1958/59 season he moved within the Kent League to FC Margate , which he left after only one season and only 11 competitive appearances. He finally let his career end from 1959 to 1961 at St Neots Town .

At the time of his death - in 1978 at the age of 48 - Allen was still playing Sunday football and serving as an official in the local Luton District & South Beds Football League . In his honor, a local competition was renamed the SOS Allen Cup , which was still played in 2017.
