Designworks, a BMW Group Company is a global design consultancy based in Newbury Park , as well as further locations in Europe ( Munich ) and Asia ( Shanghai ). The company was founded in 1972 under the name DesignworksUSA and taken over by BMW in 1995. Since the takeover, the company has been an independent subsidiary of the BMW Group .

history

The design studio was founded in 1972 by Charles Pelly in Malibu . Initially the studio consisted of just three designers, but soon expanded due to its location at the heart of automotive design in Southern California. The design studio's first customers were Hyster and the Otis Elevator Company . Due to his many years of experience in industrial design , Designworks received the first order from the BMW brand in 1986 for the seat concept for the BMW 8 Series . Two years later, the company moved to Newbury Park ( Thousand Oaks ), where Designworks is still based today.

Customers such as Nokia , Siemens and Compaq were added to the studio's customer list at the beginning of the 1990s. BMW AG had been involved in Designworks since August 1991, the first major order for BMW being to adapt the BMW E1 to American traffic conditions and to give the design study called "BMW E2" an impression of American accents as part of the necessary bodywork changes. In 1993 Designworks received another order for a BMW exterior project for the BMW 3 Series (E46). In the spring of 1995, the BMW Group then acquired the design studio. During this time, David Hockney's BMW Art Car was also created in the studio in California . In 2000 Designworks opened a studio in Munich . Designworks has also been represented in Asia since 2006. In 2011 a studio was opened in Shanghai to take account of the region's growing importance for global design developments.

One of the previous presidents of Designworks (2001–2004) is Adrian van Hooydonk , who is now Head of BMW Group Design. In 2009 Laurenz Schaffer, former director of the Designworks Munich studio, took over the position of president.

On April 8, 2015, BMW Group DesignworksUSA changed its name to "Designworks, a BMW Group Company".
