He was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1991 . Haynes and Gordon Greenidge formed one of the most dominant test partnerships on the West Indies cricket team in the 1980s . Together they reached 16 century partnerships and four times they even exceeded the 200 mark. Together they made a total of 6,482 runs in test partnerships, the second highest value for a batting partnership in the history of test cricket . His best test innings were 184 runs (from 395 balls) against England in 1984. He is one of the very few test batsman who was eliminated due to the rarely used rule of handled the ball . This happened in the match against India on November 24, 1983.
In his first ODI in Antigua , he scored a Century against Australia with a score of 148 . Haynes held a number of ODI records such as "Most Runs" and "Most Centuries".
