Reservoirs flowed through Darretalsperre

The Desná (German Desse ) is a left tributary of the Kamenice in the Jizera Mountains , Czech Republic .

The only 3 km long mountain river is created in the town of Desná by the union of the Bílá Desná and the Černá Desná . The Desse flows in a southerly direction and flows into the Kamenice in Tanvald .

The Desná regularly caused severe floods. Heavy floods are known from the years 1858, 1875, 1885 and 1888. After the flood of the century on July 29, 1897 , when 310 mm of precipitation fell in one day, the decision was made to build dams for flood protection. But it was precisely because of this that the greatest flood disaster occurred. After the dam on the White Desse broke , the tidal wave caused devastating damage along the river in Dessendorf (Desná) and Tannwald (Tanvald).

Bílá Desná

The Bílá Desná (German White Desse ) is the right or western source river of the Desse. It rises in the moorland west of the Jizera mountain ( Siechhübel , 1122 m) and flows in a south-easterly direction through the forests of the Jizera Mountains to Desná, where it joins the Černá Desná after 12 km. There was once a dam on the White Desse. It broke on September 18, 1916. Its remains are known as the Broken Dam (protržená přehrada).

Černá Desná

The Černá Desná (German Black Desse ) is the left or eastern source river of the Desná. It rises in the Louka u Studánky bog east of the Jizera ( Siechhübel ), where the Hnědá Smědá ( Brown Wittig ) also originates, and flows south to Desná, where it joins the Bílá Desná after 13 km.

At the Černá Desná there are the Darretalsperre (vodní nadrz Souš) and waterfalls .
