Despina Vandi
Despina Vandi ( Greek Δέσποινα Βανδή , actually Despina Malea (Δέσποινα Μαλέα), born July 22, 1969 in Tübingen ) is a Greek singer who has sold over a million records in Greece alone .
Life
Vandi was born in Germany and moved back with her family to the northern Greek hometown of Kavala at the age of six . After passing the Abitur, she first studied at the Philosophical Faculty (Institute for Philosophy , Pedagogy and Psychology ) of the University of Thessaloniki . She made her first stage appearances during her studies in Thessaloniki. Later, after graduation, she moved to Athens to better pursue her artistic career. She is married to the former Greek soccer player and former president of AEK Athens , Demis Nikolaidis . They have a daughter (Melina, born February 8, 2004) and a son (Giorgos, born August 21, 2007).
Career
After Vandi took singing lessons, her music career began in 1994. That year her debut album Gela Mou was released.
In 1996 the second album Esena Perimeno came out, which was produced by her then partner Tony Kontaxakis .
In 1997 she had her big breakthrough. With her third album Deka Entoles , which was produced and composed by the producer Phoebus , she reached platinum. In 2000 she released the six-platinum single, Ypofero .
The fourth album Gia (2001), this time in collaboration with Mark Kay & Phoebus, was again a huge success for Vandi. It reached platinum status 11 days after its release. Even in Lebanon and Turkey , the double album became a long-runner.
2002 was her international year: she won the World Music Award for the best Greek singer who lives and works in Greece.
International success
She made her international breakthrough in 2003 with the single Gia , which was played up and down in clubs. The follow-up singles Opa Opa (2004) and Come Along Now (2005) also became a success across Europe.
Today, Vandi continues to be very successful in the Greek-speaking and Middle Eastern regions and countries such as Romania , Bulgaria , Hungary and Ukraine . With the singles Jambi and Amanes , she was able to build on her successes.
In 2008 she also appeared as a musical guest on the Schiller album Sehnsucht and contributed the vocal part for the song "Destiny".
