Dessalines |
Dessalines is a city in the Artibonite department in northern Haiti . It was named after Jean-Jacques Dessalines , the first ruler of independent Haiti.
The city is located on road 112 on the Riviere Estber around 80 kilometers northeast of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince at an altitude of 159 meters above sea level. 165,424 inhabitants live in Dessalines. In 1986 the Claire Heureuse Hospital was built.
In 1804 Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared his hometown Marchand the capital and renamed it Dessalines . After his violent death in 1806, his successor Henri Christophe made Milot the capital.
