history

Because the Dessau SV ZAB was in financial difficulties, the handball department left the club and founded their own club with the Dessau handball club in 1996 . The club took over the right to start the 2nd handball Bundesliga and the team was able to occupy a ninth place under the new name in the first season . In the DHB-Pokal 1998/99 the team reached Dessau after victories against TV Krefeld-Oppum , SV Eiche Biederitz and TSG Ober-Eschbach the quarter-finals of the DHB-Pokal there they were eliminated by the later title winner THW Kiel . In the North Season they finished the 1999/2000 season in third place behind SG VfL / BHW Hameln and Eintracht Hildesheim and thus just missed promotion to the handball Bundesliga .

Before the 2004/05 season , the Bundesliga team was nicknamed  the beavers and this season they took 15th place for the first time in the lower half of the table. In the following season, the club was able to achieve a placement in the upper half of the table with ninth place. After the merger of the cities of  Dessau  and  Roßlau in  2006, the two handball clubs Dessauer HV and TV Roßlau merged to form  Dessau-Roßlauer HV .
