DethKarz is a futuristic racing game for PC that was distributed in Germany in 1998 by Infogrames . It was developed by the Australian studio Beam Software . The original distribution partner was Melbourne House .

Game content

The aim of the game is to fight for first place against 19 competing drivers on tricky racetracks in four different environments ( city , Caribbean , Antarctica , Mars ). The player can also fight his competitors with armed force. The routes often have free-floating carriageways with no side borders and are characterized by difficult combinations of curves and inclines. If the player drives over the lane boundary and falls into the depths, he will be teleported back onto the lane after a short time. The current speed of the vehicle is halved. There is an abundance of power-ups distributed on the tracks, which briefly improve the driving behavior of your own car, provide better weapons or offer protection from certain weapons.

There are four vehicles to choose from, which differ greatly in their driving behavior. Vehicles show damage (graphically, however, only from smoke), but this has no effect on driving behavior. If the damage level exceeds a certain level, the vehicle in question explodes and is out of the race. Repairs are carried out in the pit area , where the repairs progress proportionally to the length of stay, or by means of a light blue power-up.

The core of the game is the championship mode. In this, the player must achieve a minimum of qualification points in order to be the winner in the end. In this way, the player unlocks further routes and vehicle upgrades. In addition to the championship mode, the player can start a single race or try to set new lap records in the time trial .

There is a multiplayer mode via network and offers space for 8 race participants.

technology

DethKarz was programmed for both the DirectX interface and the Glide graphics interface .

criticism

Despite the relatively small scope of the game, DethKarz was able to score points with critics thanks to its 3D graphics and impressive driving physics, and achieved consistently good ratings.
