Detlef Limbach (born December 11, 1953 ) is a former German soccer player. With the BSG Chemie Leipzig he played in the 1970s in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

At the age of eleven, Detlef Limbach was accepted into the school team of the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Leipzig in 1964. He played his first men's games with the second team of BSG Chemie, with whom he played in the third-class district league until 1975 . After he was regularly used in the second team in the first half of the 1975/76 season, he moved up with the beginning of the second half for Manfred Graul , who was drafted for military service, in the top division team of Chemie Leipzig. Mainly deployed in midfield, Limbach played all 13 league games by the end of the season. Subsequently, the league team was relegated, and in the following two league seasons Limbach was only used as a substitute in nine point games. In both seasons, Chemie Leipzig was the season winner and took part - without success - in the promotion games. While Limbach was not called up in the promotion round in 1977, he completed seven of the eight encounters in 1978. For the 1978/79 season, Chemie got a new trainer, Dieter Sommer , who trusted Limbach from the start. Limbach was missing only once in the 22 league games and scored six goals, always playing in midfield. For the third time, his team took the promotion round in attack and this time reached promotion to the league. Limbach was in all eight games and was successful with two goals. In his second league season 1979/80, he was injured in the first league game and had to pause eight game days. After that, he no longer achieved his old level of performance and was only used as a substitute in seven other league games by the end of the season.

For the 1980/81 season Limbach moved to the GDR league club BSG Stahl Nordwest Leipzig . There he was able to establish himself again as a regular player, during two league seasons he only missed four point games. In 1982 the BSG Stahl had to relegate to the district league, in which Limbach helped the team to regain promotion within a year. However, he moved with the beginning of the 1983/84 season to the GDR league club BSG progress Weissenfels . There, too, he was part of the regular staff, played 20 of the 22 league games and achieved his most successful season as a goalscorer with eight goals. Progress Weissenfels missed relegation, so Limbach had to continue his career in the district league. He never returned to higher-class football. He was left with a record of 21 league games without scoring and 99 GDR league games in which he was able to score 16 goals.
