Detlev Fehling

Detlev Fehling (born June 10, 1929 in Berlin ; † March 15, 2008 in Heikendorf ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Fehling had lived in Kiel since 1946, where he also studied. He received his doctorate in 1955 from the University of Kiel under Hans Diller with a thesis on Marcus Terentius Varro . The habilitation , also in Kiel took place on July 1, 1964. Subsequently, he was first lecturer , from 1970 to 1994 then professor of classical philology at the University of Kiel.

Fehling published on both Latin and Greek literature of antiquity. Fehling became known, but at the same time very controversial, in classical studies primarily through his thesis put forward in 1971 that the sources cited by the ancient historian Herodotus are entirely based on his own invention and that Herodotus did not travel to the countries he described.
