The German-Swiss International School ( English German Swiss International School , GSIS ; Chinese  德瑞 國際 學校  /  德瑞 国际 学校 , Pinyin Dé Ruì Guójì Xuéxiào , Jyutping Dak 1 Seoi 6 Gwok 3 zai 3 Hok 6 haau 6 ) is a 1969 founded international school in Hong Kong . The school is based on two systems. It offers a German -speaking section corresponding to the German school system and an English-speaking section, which in turn is aligned with the curriculum and school system of England .

More than 1,300 pupils from over 30 different countries prepare for German or British degrees in two parallel branches. The school encompasses all grades from kindergarten to secondary level in the German and English school systems. The school also includes a German-speaking vocational school with training as a merchant in wholesale and foreign trade as well as a merchant for freight forwarding and logistics services .

History and locations

The school was founded by German - Swiss families who were looking for a bilingual German - English education for their children in an international environment. When it was founded in 1969, 73 students attended the school in a building on Barker Road. Due to increasing student numbers, the school had to move several times until the first school building opened in 1975 on Guildford Road, today's Peak Campus. Today it comprises three buildings. The campus in Pok Fu Lam also belongs to the school today . There you will find the German kindergarten , the German preschool classes and the first class of the German elementary school , as well as the English kindergarten ( English Preschool ) and the first two years of the English Primary School ( English Infant School ). The upper primary school classes of both sections as well as the advanced classes (German secondary school and English secondary school ) are located on the Peak Campus . The business college is located in Sai Ying Pun .

Due to the school expansion project and the renovation and construction work on the Peak Campus that has been ongoing since 2008 , the upper primary school classes of both sections have been temporarily housed on an alternate campus in Wan Chai since 2011 .

fees

For every child who is admitted to school, a debenture (comparable to an interest-free bond ) must be acquired from the GSIS Foundation . The school offers two forms of debenture. The standard debenture refundable when the student leaves school is HK $ 475,000 . The development debenture , which is non-refundable and will instead be donated to the school for the school expansion project, amounts to Hong Kong dollars 332,500.

For both sections, for kindergarten and all grades, the registration fee is 3700 Hong Kong dollars and the entrance exam fee is 4300 Hong Kong dollars. Annual fees are HK $ 137,400 for kindergarten, HK $ 142,100 for elementary school, HK $ 171,400 until completion of secondary education, and $ 181,200 after completion of upper secondary education . The vocational school has a tuition fee of 38,500 Hong Kong dollars and an annual fee of 8,400 Hong Kong dollars.

criticism

In December 2013, an article in the South China Morning Post criticized the school for exceeding the statutory maximum kindergarten enrollment fee of 30 Hong Kong dollars by 100 times. According to Hong Kong law, a kindergarten cannot exceed the legal enrollment limit without government approval. The school had not yet received such a permit at the time.
