history

First bilateral contacts can be found in the colonial period: Already in 1885, the disputed German Empire and the Kingdom of Spain in the Karoline question , among others, the archipelago of the Caroline Islands , which are a significant part of today's Micronesian territory. The dispute initially went out in favor of Spain, which took over colonial rule over the Carolines. In 1899, Spain finally sold the islands to the German Empire under the German-Spanish Treaty . With the occupation by Japan in 1914, Germany's colonial influence on Micronesia ended.

Diplomatic relations

Diplomatic relations have existed since April 21, 1992. Germany does not have an embassy in Micronesia; the German embassy in Manila in the Philippines is responsible for this . On the part of Micronesia there is also no embassy in Germany; the responsible representation is the Micronesian embassy in Washington, DC in the United States .

Economy and development

According to the Federal Foreign Office, the bilateral trade relations are "extremely modest in volume". In 2014, imports to Germany were 20,000 euros, and exports to Micronesia 169,000 euros.

Germany occasionally supports small projects in the field of technical cooperation . Further development-policy projects in Micronesia are financed indirectly through levies to the European Union . Furthermore, the German Society for International Cooperation is funding a project on sustainable forestry in states of the Pacific Community , from which Micronesia also benefits.
