The German-Tongan relations were in 1876 by the treaty of friendship between Germany and Tonga initiated and sealed.

Diplomatic relations before the founding of the Federal Republic

The political background of the friendship treaty of 1876 was the heyday of imperialism and colonialism in the Pacific region. During this phase, various great powers (including the German Reich ) fought over the division of the world. In the Samoa Treaty of 1899 , Germany recognized the Tonga Islands as part of the British sphere of interest . In 1900 Tonga became a British protectorate . During World War I , New Zealand recruited Tongans into the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to fight Germany .

Diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Germany

On May 1, 1976, diplomatic relations were resumed with the now independent Tonga. On June 1, 1977 the friendship treaty between Germany and Tonga was renewed ( Federal Law Gazette 1978 II pp. 136, 137 ). The Tongan Foreign Minister visited Berlin in June 2006.

The German embassy in Wellington is also responsible for Tonga. A German honorary consul is active in Nukuʻalofa . Tonga's embassy in Great Britain is also responsible for Germany. There are honorary consuls in Düsseldorf and Hamburg .

Germany runs various development programs in Tonga, including in the areas of education and health.
