The relations between Germany and the Marshall Islands have existed since 1991 and from the Foreign Office called "traditionally friendly and good".
history
Towards the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the Marshall Islands were subject to the colonial rule of the German Empire . At that time they fell under the German protected areas in the South Pacific and were then administered together with other territories in the South Pacific as German New Guinea .
Diplomatic relations
The establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states took place on September 23, 1991. However, there is no German embassy in the Marshall Islands, the responsible agency is the German embassy in Manila in the Philippines . Conversely, there is also no diplomatic representation of the Marshall Islands in Germany. The Marshallic Embassy in New York in the United States is responsible .
In mid-July 2014, Foreign Minister Tony de Brum took part in the 5th Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin .
Economy and development
Economic relationships within ocean shipping are of certain importance . Of more than 1200 ships registered on the Marshall Islands, about 240 come from Germany; this corresponds to about a fifth. For 2014, Germany's exports were in the three-digit million range.
The fields of activity in development policy relate primarily to micro-projects in technical cooperation and climate protection. Further projects are financed indirectly through contributions to the European Union .
