The German Jazz Union (formerly Union of German Jazz Musicians , UDJ) is a nationwide association of jazz musicians in Germany . The association has its seat and its office in Berlin.

Tasks and activities

The association organizes musicians as a professional and political interest group, but is also open to jazz initiatives, regional associations and other jazz institutions as well as private sponsors. The German Jazz Union was founded in 1973 as the Union of German Jazz Musicians (UDJ) in Marburg. The Marburg Jazz Forum, initiated by Claus Schreiner in 1973 , provided the framework for around 60 leading jazz musicians, press representatives and music functionaries to campaign for state support and cultural-political recognition of the activities of German jazz musicians. After an “initiative for strong jazz in Germany”, which around 1,000 musicians joined, the then UDJ experienced a fundamental restructuring and strengthening in early 2012.

In addition to participating in committees and associations as well as providing information to its members, the German Jazzunion had advisory status in setting up the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra and youth jazz supported by the German Music Council . It is represented in national and international committees and organizations. These include the Federal Jazz Conference, the German Music Council, the cultural and political society, the Alliance of Liberal Arts and the Artists' Social Fund .

One of the tasks of the German Jazzunion is to send experts to juries for awards or funding programs. These include: The venue program award rock, pop and jazz, the German jazz journalist award, the jazzahead ! and the SWR Jazz Prize . For outstanding young musicians, the German Jazz Union's sponsorship award is also awarded annually as part of the Federal Youth Meeting.

The German Jazz Union has initiated and awarded the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize every two years since 1994 with the support of the GEMA Foundation, the German Association of Composers and the GVL . The central goals of the German Jazz Union include an improved presence and perception of jazz in Germany as well as a functioning infrastructure in which musicians can live, work and be creative. The managing director is Urs Johnen.

On May 27, 2019 it was announced that the name of the association is now Deutsche Jazzunion.
