Schreiner first grew up in West Berlin, where, as a high school student, he ran the school newspaper at the Goethe Gymnasium in Wilmersdorf . From 1962 he lived in Marburg, where he graduated from high school at the Philippinum and founded the school newspaper there. He also played as a drummer in jazz bands. In 1964 he organized the symposion in jazz festival with Hessian student jazz bands (which was later part of the Hessentag ). In the same year he began studying sociology at the University of Marburg . In addition, journalistic activities for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the Hessischer Rundfunk (until 2002 the program Music between Cuba and Tierra del Fuego ), the ZDF and the WDR ( Musica Popular Brasileira and Musica Latina ) quickly took place .

After meeting Fritz Rau in 1965, he also worked as a school and jazz advisor for the German Jazz Federation and as a tour manager for the Lippmann + Rau agency . In 1967 he represented West Germany at the founding meeting of the European Jazz Federation in Warsaw. Since the same year he was self-employed as a concert organizer. He looked after musicians such as Albert Mangelsdorff , Manfred Schoof , Volker Kriegel , Emil Mangelsdorff and Klaus Doldinger , but soon also focused on Brazilian music. Since 1970 he has organized tours by Baden-Powell , Gilberto Gil , Egberto Gismonti and Milton Nascimento .

In addition, there have been recordings since 1972 (initially with the Dave Pike Set and musicians from Salvador da Bahia and above all with Sebastião Tapajós ). The Tropical Music publishing house, founded in 1976, was soon expanded to include a record label on which it made over 180 sound carriers under license (initially mainly from Latin America, but increasingly also from other regions of the world) available for the European market. The Cape Verdean singer Cesária Évora , who became very well known on the German market through Tropical Music, deserves special mention .

In 1973, on the initiative of Schreiner, who was playing at the Marburg District Jazz Workers' Association , the Union of German Jazz Musicians was founded, and he was its managing director until 1983. In 2010 he was honored as a publicist for his festival review Legends of with the ECHO Jazz .
