The former German field cemetery

investment

The plant was built between 1936 and 1938 based on a design by Robert Tischler . It is kept in the style of a castle of the dead and characteristic of the National Socialist memorial culture and thus a child of its time. The building material was brought in from South Tyrol and the construction was carried out by a Munich-based construction company.

The memorial was built on the site of a former German field cemetery just a few meters from the banks of the Isonzo. A memorial altar has been erected in the chapel above the crypt. The entrance gate is a work of art made from Austrian and Italian gun barrels. Some of the dead were reburied here from the military cemetery in Karfreit in 1938 . 946 war dead from the First World War are buried under a stone slab in the vault. A burial ground is attached to the memorial. Several war dead from the Second World War were buried there in the spring of 1945. The facility is a cultural monument and was initially maintained and maintained by the Slovenian state and since 2001 by the Volksbund. It is the largest German war cemetery on the former Isonzo front in Slovenia.
