The German wrestling championships are held annually in the Greco-Roman (classical) style, free style and women's freestyle wrestling.

history

The first German championships in wrestling took place in Cologne in 1893 . As was customary at the time, there were no weight classes. The tournament, which Cologne's Hubert Schwerger was able to win, was organized by the DAV ( Deutscher Athleten-Verband , since 1911 German Reich Association for Athletics , today the German Wrestling Association ). From then on, the championships took place every two years, between 1903 and 1912 every three years. In 1906 there were three weight classes for the first time. The German championships have been held annually since 1912, but were canceled from 1914 to 1918 and from 1944 to 1947 due to the world wars.

After world championships for women were held for the first time in 1987 , German championships for women have also been held since 1994 .
